Second Marriages and Divorce There are nuances that come every new relationship and a second marriage is no exception. According to the Bible, marriage was created by God and ordained to be a life-long union between a man and a woman. Is it the same thing when you remarry?
Will God Bless a Second Marriage?
The Bible states that subsequent marriage after a divorce when the ex-partner is still alive is considered adultery.
Matt. 19:9 “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
Does this Mean a Second Marriage is a Sin?
“If a man marries a woman and she doesn’t please him because he finds something wrong with her, he writes her a divorce certificate and gives it to her and sends her out of his house, and she leaves, 2 and if she marries another man, 3 and the second man hates her and writes her a divorce certificate and gives it to her and sends her out of his house, or if the second man dies, who took her?
Some people could argue that just because God allows some things doesn’t necessarily mean that He is pleased. There are Bible scholars that are of the opinion that death is the only thing that should end a marriage. Therefore, divorce is seen as going against the will of God.
What Does the Bible Say About Remarriage?
Second Marriages and Divorce In most instances, remarrying is considered adultery unless the spouse has died. Sexual immorality is also cited as an exception.
To the rest I say (I, not the Lord) that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him.
For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
Here are some of the Bible verses that talk about divorce and remarriage:
Romans 7:2-3: For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.
Pharisees asked, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” Matthew 19:3-9 Have you read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and cling close to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?
So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
Will God Bless a Third Marriage?
As it has been stated, when a spouse willfully divorces, their first or second partner, they can’t expect the third marriage to be blessed by God. It’s certain that God doesn’t like divorce.
Can God Forgive You For Getting Second Marriages and Divorce?
Second Marriages and Divorce just like any other sin can be forgiven. All sins are forgiven through Christ.
Micah 7:18-19: Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.
