Zodiac signs and Christianity

Zodiac signs and Christianity have been a thing for a couple of decades. In the past, there used to be dedicated sections in newspapers and magazines.

The fad continues to gain prominence, even among Generation Z. For those brought up in a Christian household, you might be wondering if Zodiac signs are compatible with the teachings of the bible.

Is It a Sin to Believe in Zodiac signs and Christianity?

Yes. God is categorical in providing guidance and clarity on believing in only Him and not His creation. Therefore, believing in Zodiac signs would be considered a sin according to Christian teachings.

Zodiac Signs Explained

Astrology is an ancient practice that has been perpetuated for centuries. It is one of the many Babylonian practices that gained influence in Greek culture and mythology. The term ‘Zodiac’ is Greek to mean ‘sculpted animal figure’.

There are twelve astrological signs namely: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

What Does the Bible Say About Zodiac signs and Christianity?

There is a ton of literature on astrological signs in the Bible. In the beginning, God created the stars, which could be seen as substantiation of His glory and majesty. In the book of Psalms 147:4, God states that He determines the number of the stars; He gives all of them their names.

Here are some verses in the Bible that explicitly condemns believing in astrology:

Jeremiah 10:2:  Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

Leviticus 19:31: “Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 18:9-13: “When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.

Is Zodiac signs and Christianity witchcraft?

No, Zodiac signs aren’t witchcraft. The term witchcraft is rather odd, especially when it comes to astrology. In the past, those that had knowledge about the positioning of the stars were considered witches. This is because they could predict the different seasons with a degree of accuracy by observing the skies.

It’s understandable why zodiac signs could be considered witchcraft as it exploits the same cognitive biases similar to other forms of superstition.  Witchcraft tends to lean towards the supernatural while astrology makes an attempt to interpret the universe.

Why are Zodiac signs and Christianity Popular Among Christians?

As we’ve stated, Astrology has a historical culture and a contemporary significance. A huge population in Western countries identifies as Christians. There are also competing New-Age beliefs that have been propagated with the advent of the internet. Such beliefs are not limited to astrology,  fortune-telling, palm reading, reincarnation, and sorcery.

In a study done by Pew Research Center, it was found out that 6/10 of the American adult population believe in at least one of the New-Age Beliefs in addition to their Christian faith. 29% of those interviewed believe in astrology.

Most Americans consider themselves spiritual and not religious. Gender, age, and other demographical considerations also played a big role in believing in the New-Age beliefs. The study also found that women are more susceptible to unconventional beliefs compared to men.

Why God Is Against Christians Believing in Zodiac Signs?

The Bible is conspicuous on why God is against seeking divine guidance from the stars. This is because we’ll start believing in the interpretations of astrology instead of believing in God.

As humans, it’s natural to ask questions about life and the world around us. We’re created in the image and likeness of God. That is why we should reach out to God to provide answers to life’s most baffling questions.

The planets and the stars were purposely created to serve as time indicators and to show the magnificence of God.  Attempts to seek revelation and discover ourselves using the stars are not only an abomination but also going contrary to God’s will.

Should You Take Zodiac  Signs Seriously?

Having discussed astrology from a biblical standpoint, you’re probably wondering if you should be giving that much thought to zodiac signs. Zodiac signs should be considered fun and meant for entertainment purposes.

Those that take such signs seriously could end up making tangible decisions either consciously or subconsciously based on what the horoscopes say. Such decisions could have far-reaching consequences in every sphere of life.

In most instances, such horoscopes are written with the sole purpose of appealing to the masses. Their recommendations are usually generalized and sometimes obvious. Naturally, we have the disposition to be superstitious.

Our primal instinct would be to relate to the horoscope message despite a lack of evidence. There is nothing wrong with being optimistic about the future. In fact, the Bible encourages us to be fervent even in the face of challenges.

To Sum it Up

When we believe in the aligning of the stars to determine our destiny, it takes away God’s grace and faithfulness in taking care of us in all seasons. Our beliefs should be firmly rooted in the word of God. The stars and constellations are a sign of wonder and the power of God.
